Description
Tasty Puerto Rican junk food.
Ingredients
- 1 Green (unripe) plantain
- oil
- 3 Garic cloves
Instructions
Tostones are a perfect crunchy snacky junk food. Peel the plantain and then cut into about 1" chunks. Fry once so these chunks get soft. (I suppose they could also be boiled in salt water at this point.) Once they are soft, take them out and smash them down with either the bottom of a glass or something of this nature. Now put them back in the oil and fry until crispy, turning to make sure both sides are even. Blot on paper towels, or not, and serve with crushed raw garlic on top.
Notes
Making this at home will help you to avoid the humiliation of the checkout girls laughing at you when you buy frozen tostones at the local Hispanic supermarket. (No really, it happened to me.) Besides, the freezer kind are definitely not as tasty.

Comments
this is one of my favorite things to make, ever.
what kind of oil do you use? i usually use plain old corn oil (not olive oil, which starts smoking too quickly).. i also put quite a bit of salt on them.
